in newtown, connecticut. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett. this just in. listen. >> 6-7 muc. sandy hook school. caller thinks someone is shooting in the building. front glass is broken, unsure why. all units, the individual that i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire. units responding sandy hook school at this time, the shooting appears to have stopped. the school is in lockdown. >> that broken glass is the result of the gunman reportedly shooting his way into the school. the unthinkable tragedy has left this very small new england town shattered tonight. 28 people dead. that's including the shooter himself. most of those killed were students at the school. very, very young students. there were 20 children killed. between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. there were also 6 adults shot dead after a heavily armed gunman dressed in black fatigues and a military vest opened fire in the school. >> we just told a little boy about his sister now and just to see him, he said who am i going to play with? i have nobody to play with now. excuse me. >> the gunma

week after the deadly school shooting in newtown, connecticut, communities across the nation and around the world pay tribute to the victims. and the national rifle association speaks out for the first time since the attack. it proposes a controversial plan to prevent similar mass shootings. let's go "outfront." good evening. i'm soledad eye brine in for erin burnett. "outfront," lowering expectations ten days before we fall off the fiscal cliff, and there is still no deal in sight. tonight, president obama urged congress to broker a scaled-down deal. >> i just spoke to speaker boehner and i also met with senator reid. in the next few days i've asked leaders of congress to work toward a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction. that's an achievable goal. that can get done in ten days. >> yesterday the house speaker john boehner failed to garner enough support from his own party to even hold a vote on his plan to raise taxes for those w

tonight. i can tell you his mother nancy lanza was found dead at the family home here in newtown, as well. she had been a teacher at the sandy hook elementary school. the school's principal dawn hochsprung was among those killed and tonight a friend remembered her as "quote, the kind of person you would want to be educating your kids. school psychologist mary sherlock was also kilged. this afternoon afternoon the brother, ryan lanza was taken in for questioning by police and he was handcuffed. officials did not label him a suspect. the gunman's father was also questioned in relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today we

. the grieving community of newtown, connecticut, began the burials today. just a moment ago, we were approached by a representative for madeleine huh shoe. her family wanted us to know -- i'm going to quote the words they said with all of you, sweet, unique, bright, sparkling, determined little girl. she was an avid reader who loved running and dancing. she was a born leader. this is the start of what will be a painful week as friends and family try to prepare to try to say good-bye to the 20 children and six educators who were killed on friday in the second worst school shooting in american history. as newtown mourns, investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated adam lanza to go on a shooting spree, to kill children, and also take the life of his own mother. we're going to have more on the investigation in a moment. but the truth is, we may never know why adam lanza chose to go on a mass killing spree. we may never know why he chose to go in a school and kill innocent 6 and 7-year-olds, but we're learn aglot more tonight about his mother nancy and the relationship she had with h
